DEVELOPING A BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICE PROGRAM FOR YOUR NURSERY – Modesto, CA

On Wednesday, November 2, 2011 the California Department of Food and Agriculture, US Department of Agriculture APHIS and the National Plant Board hosted a “free” workshop for Central Valley nursery growers, “DEVELOPING A BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICE PROGRAM FOR YOUR NURSERY”.  Aurelio Posadas, National Plant Board, emceed the evening workshop and provided an overview on “Systems Approach to Nursery Certification”.

Kathy Kosta, CDFA Plant Pathologist, presented an excellent overview of “Phytophythora ramorum Best Management Practices (BMP)”; Chris Zanobini, CANGC President, provided an update on “CANGC’s BMP grant for the nursery industry”; and, the final presentation was given by Jan Hedberg, Oregon Department of Agriculture, on the “Grower Assisted Inspection Program for Oregon wholesale nursery growers”.

This workshop, held at the Doubletree Hotel in Modesto, was attended by over 30 nursery growers representing 20+ wholesale grower operations.  Following the presentations, growers were able to ask specific questions and to gather more detail on the various regulatory programs being discussed at the state and federal agency level.
