Highlights from Our Southern California Workshop on Phytophthora Prevention in Habitat Restoration

We were delighted to host the workshop “Phytophthora Prevention in Habitat Restoration” on February 7th, 2025, at the beautiful California Botanic Garden in Claremont for a full-day workshop focused on critical plant pathogen issues. The session concentrated primarily on Phytophthora species impacting nursery production and ecological restoration efforts. Led by Dr. Johanna Del Castillo (UCCE Cooperative Extension Specialist, UC Davis), Dr. Sebastian Fajardo (Postdoctoral Researcher, UC Davis), and Dr. Charles Barnes (Plant Pathologist, US Forest Service), the event aimed to increase the awareness of pathogen risks. Participants reviewed Best Management Practices (BMPs) for nurseries, highlighting the Accreditation to Improve Restoration (AIR) program, alongside specific sanitary practices for restoration sites. The workshop also shared valuable research findings on Phytophthora ecology and fostered productive dialogue between diverse practitioners, managers and scientists. Key technical topics included Phytophthora fundamentals, AIR program specifics, restoration BMPs, white pine blister rust awareness, and the risks associated with Pythium in nursery settings. Viewed topics were complemented by practical, hands-on workshops covering field scouting and sampling techniques, lab detection methods, and engaging round table sessions.
We are excited to announce that a similar workshop opportunity is planned for Northern California during the third week of May 2025 to be held at UC Davis Campus! We look forward to welcoming you there, sharing the latest practices, and addressing any questions or concerns you may have about ensuring plant health in nurseries and restoration projects.
