Dr. Laura Cammarisano is the Assistant Professor of protected horticulture in the Department of Plant Sciences at UC Davis. Her research integrates expertise in plant physiology, abiotic stress response, Controlled Environment Agriculture, protected horticulture, Vertical Farming, horticultural lighting, crop nutritional quality.
The Cammarisano Lab, active from November 2024, focuses on optimizing the cultivation of vegetables and transplants in protected environments, including both greenhouse and vertical farming, and increasing the sustainability of these farming systems. In terms of methodology, the research program explores 1) plant response to the surrounding environment and abiotic factors/stresses on different scales, from physiology, agronomy, and biochemistry to genetics, and 2) innovative non-invasive methodologies to monitor plant performance.
Before moving to the USA, she worked as postdoctoral researcher at the Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ), in Germany, where she gained research experience in monitoring and controlling plant morphology and phytochemistry to abiotic stress in greenhouse and indoor farming.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in biology from University of Calabria, in Italy, and a PhD in plant sciences with a thesis on the optimization of artificial light for indoor plant cultivation from Aberystwyth University, in the United Kingdom.
